Future Flight Hawaii Residential Program
Apollo: the Next Generation (Return to the Moon)
July 8-13, 2001
Module Descriptions

       Failure is not an option
Teamwork and problem solving will help your crew complete the task presented

       Platch
Design a crew patch...a symbol of your mission and the members of your crew...be sure to include your adopted crew member...your chicken

       Van Allen Belt
Teamwork....teamwork...teamwork....it will not fail because of me....learn the Headed for the Future song and movements

       Zapper
Use the light detecting Logibloc kit to build an alarm and other devices

       Earth/Moon ABCs
How is the moon different from Earth...size, gravity, radiation, temperature?

       Newton's Laws
Action-reaction....design and build a bottle rocket to be launched later in the week

Gemini STARLAB (sponsored by the Gemini Telescope Project)
Learn about the night sky and the moon in the darkened dome of STARLAB

       For All Mankind
Learn about the remarkable days of the Apollo moon landings....failure is not an option

Solar Power (sponsored by the Hawaii Electric Light Company)
Photovoltaic systems will power the future lunar habitats....see the photovoltaic displays from the Hawaii Electric Light Company and use your solar cell kit to learn about how efficient solar power is

       Orbit/Rendezvous
Mathematics is the language of science....use your Safe-T compass and protractor and compare moon and Earth sizes, and how we will get from the Earth to the moon

       Search for Water
Satellite data indicate that there may be water on the moon trapped as ice....what is water, what is it used for, how do we detect it?

       What is science?
What is the science inquiry method....observation, hypothesis, testing, data collection, analysis

       Solar Sailing
One of the "future flights" will be a solar sail race from the Earth to the moon...use a magnetic levitation track to test your sail design

       Volcanoes
Volcanoes are prominent features on the lunar surface....look inside a model of a volcano and test your ideas

       Lunar geology
What minerals found in the lunar soil and rocks can be used....test for these materials with chemical indicators

       Solar Rover
Build and test your solar lunar rover to accomplish the mission tasks

       Liftoff
Apply Newton's Laws and blast off your bottle rocket

       Life Support

Testing urine of crew members, disorientation activity and super absorbent powder testing (remove balance, etc.)

       Lunar Topography/Art
Learn about the major features on the lunar surface...and use art to share your interpretation

       Resource Analysis
Use various tools to test the environment in your lunar vehicle or on the lunar surface

       Toys in Space
You will be in microgravity on the way to the moon....what is microgravity...use simple toys and compare their behavior on earth and in space

       Center of Gravity
Learn about balance and construct a radio antenna model applying Center of Gravity

       Apollo 13
Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork....problem solving to respond to an emergency

       Future Flight
What will be the most spectacular space flights of the next 100 years...learn about the history of aviation and space pioneers

       Return to the Moon
As a crew, you will be testing the rocks and soil for minerals, looking for water, testing solar power, building an antenna, and communicating your findings to mission control

       Debrief Preparation
As a crew, prepare to present your mission findings to other crew members and the mission control team

       Bottle Science
Use preform and plastic bottles along with an air pump to learn science using bottles...build a lava lamp and a wave tube, and test your tornado tube

       The Hawaiian Moon
Learn about how the moon was and is significant to the Hawaiian culture

       Mission Debriefing
As a crew, present your mission findings for evaluation by the science panel

       Pipette Rocket
Test different combinations of hydrogen and oxygen...and launch rockets toward the targets...points will be awarded

Space Station (presented by Star Station One, Bishop Museum)
Learn about the International Space Station (call sign Alpha) from a space station expert....it is the way station to the moon and beyond

       HCC is a blast
Our two scientists in chemistry and physics from the Honolulu Community College will present exciting science demonstrations

       Lunar Robotics Soccer
Crews compete in the soccer competition using remote control vehicles....the winning crew takes on the mission control team

       Alien Rendezvous
A tradition of Future Flight.....we are visited by aliens in a remarkable academy award winning program

       To be an Astronaut
How are astronauts selected and trained...you too can be an astronaut

       Lunartic Science
Laugh and be excited by the humor and science demonstrations by the best demonstration team in Hawaii
