Flight of the first Educator Astronaut - Barbara Morgan
STS 118: Igniting the flame of knowledge
The crew is made up of Commander: Scott Kelly; Pilot: Charlie Hobaugh; Mission Specialists: Tracy Caldwell, Rick Mastracchio, and Dave Williams, of the Canadian Space Agency and educator astronaut Barbara Morgan. They will be taking up Astronaut Clay Anderson, who will stay aboard the International Space Station as the Flight Engineer for Expedition 15 and bringing home Flight Engineer Sunita Williams. STS-118 is an assembly/construction mission to the space station. Specifically, STS-118 will deliver and install the third starboard truss segment and the external stowage platform 3, and replace one of the four control movement gyroscopes. The STS-118 will mark the first flight of an educator astronaut, and will include educational aspects aimed at sparking imagination, dreams and curiosity of the next generation of explorers.

Barbara Morgan's Mission Specialist Duties for STS-118:
NASA Space Shuttle flight STS-118, has a special significance for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Barbara Morgan, a twenty-four year veteran schoolteacher, is assigned to the flight. Morgan will have specific assignments as a mission specialist including operating the shuttle and space station's robotic arms during the mission. The robotic arm will be used to inspect the shuttle's heat shield before it comes back home. The arm also will be used to unberth the new hardware from the shuttle's payload bay for installation onto the space station during spacewalks.
