About KaAMS

NASA Cooperative Agreement
Kids as Airborne Mission Scientists (KaAMS aka LUAU II) is a Cooperative Agreement funded by LEARNERS between NASA's Learning Technologies Project, NASA's Education Division, Goddard Space Flight Center, The Pennsylvania State University, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and NASA Dryden Space Flight Center.

Project Duration: January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2004

Project Summary:
KaAMS is developing web-based curriculum materials based on ERAST and other experimental aircraft, remote sensing, and earth science data to investigate environmental problems. Problem scenarios involve students looking at Earth's environments as interrelated, interdependent systems. An existing web-based tool (Web Enhanced Learning Environment Strategy: WELES) assists teachers in preparing lesson plans using NASA content, including: aircraft technologies, mission planning and flight operations, high altitude flight, and remote sensing. Hands-on experiments are augmenting the online materials. Products and materials are being piloted in several middle schools in PA, HI, and CA. The possibility exists to involve students in real-time mission activities; the students would plan the flight and remote sensing targets, and then make real-time decisions as the mission unfolds.

LEARNERS
LEARNERS stands for "Leading Educators to Applications, Research and NASA-related Educational Resources in Science." The goal of LEARNERS is to enhance K-12 science, mathematics, technology and geography education through Internet-based products derived from content on NASA's missions.
