The goal of this lesson is for students to develop background knowledge on volcanology while they are participating in building different volcano models. To attain this objective, students participate in the different hands-on activities on volcanoes: gelatin volcano activity, lava layering, lava flows. Based on the understanding of what volcanoes are, how they work, what features they have, and what lava flows are, students can determine what data they will need to collect to locate active lava flows on Kilauea.
