Student reflection activity:
- Prompt students to think about the threats to the coral
reefs.
- Prompt students to think about the causes and consequences
of those threats.
- Prompt students to think about the relationship between
the causes and consequences of the threats.
- Prompt students to think about what remedies can they
suggest to prevent the destruction of the coral reefs.
Assessment:
- Students have identified the key threats of coral reefs
including
- natural threats: Hurricane. El Nino. Warm ocean temperature and
high sea level. NOTE: Warm ocean temperatures and high sea level could
be natural threats or could also be a result of human influences on
the global climate.
- man-made threats: pollution, over-fishing, coastal development.
- Students demonstrate their understanding of the causal
relationship between the causes of threats and the consequences of threats.
- Students suggest remedies to prevent coral reef destruction.
Ideas for math lesson connections
- Students create a chart which shows the relative altitude (to scale)
of sea level, Kailua, typical prop plane cruising altitude, commercial
jet cruising altitude, satellite orbital radius

Ideas for geography lesson connections
- Students investigate the Hawaiian Islands. For example, the students
might create a report describing the location, climate, history, culture,
and geography of the island.

Ideas for technology lesson connections
- Word processing: Students create their own electronic
journal for keeping notes on KaAMS project.
- Database: Students create a database of vocabulary words
and terms they will learn throughout KaAMS.
- Graphics: Students create pictures of Hawaiian Islands,
remote sensing missions, aeronautics.
- Presentation software: Students create a short presentation
on their understanding of airborne remote sensing.
- Web development: Students begin to develop a web-site to report their
progress and what they learn during the KaAMS project.

Sheet: Writing a letter to Governor (RD-2)
The Governor in your state will participate in a National Governor Meeting
and has a schedule to meet Hawaii State Governor in that meeting. Since
the coral reefs in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands area comprises 69%
of all coral reef areas under U.S. jurisdiction, one of great concerns
to Hawaii State Governor is to figure out the possible threats to the
coral reefs and find solutions. He seeks some advices about the coral
reefs problems to other State Governors, especially to your State Governor
in the meeting. Therefore, your State Governor would like to request your
help by asking you to provide him with recommendations. Since you finished
your investigation about the coral reefs problems, he is eager to receive
your recommendations. Please write a letter Governor in which problems
to the coral reefs and solutions clearly are described to your State
