Global Mars Map
| Legend of Units | |
| Mottled Knobby Terrain--Mottled plains and abundant, kilometer-size, dark, knob-like hills spaced generally a few kilometers apart and commonly grouped into linear chains. Interpretation: Knobs are probably small volcanoes and erosional remnants. Plains are probably degraded lava flows or sediments. | |
| |
Channel and Flood Plain Material--Dark, sinuous, intertwining albedo patterns. Interpretation: Fluvial deposits; distinct albedo patterns probably represent channels with bars and islands. |
| |
Smooth Plains Material--Forms patches and regions of flat, featureless plains; lightly cratered. Interpretation: Probably consists of aeolian deposits. |
Printing the Map
The area of the Mars Map
within the Shockwave window can be printed. To do so, set the paper
orientation for your printer to "landscape", so that the printed aera
is wider than it is tall. This can usually be done through your
browser's "File:Page Setup" menu option.
Also, a printable version of the entire map is available in the Printable Lesson Plan section's Printable Global Mars Map page.
Viking Orbiter images of Mars can be found at the Center For Mars Exploration's Atlas of Mars site.
