Protection from Mt. Pinatubo Lahars

The above images are two views from the same dike. At left we see what happens when land has been covered by lahar but is too dangerous to rebuild. At right, the area protected by the dike is productive agricultural land. And notice the other volcano (not Mt. Pinatubo) in the background!

This was once a house along the Pasig-Potrero Valley that was buried by mudflows. Now that erosion of the valley is taking place, it is often possible to see parts of houses sticking out of the dried mud.
