Planetary geology, Remote sensing, Educational outreach

    Petrologic Evolution of the Moon — research to determine the petrologic/geochemical characteristics of lunar highland rocks and of their parent magmas to understand the bulk composition, differentiation, and geologic evolution of the Moon. With P.I. Jeff Taylor, I have assisted with the quantitative X-ray diffraction analyses of the fine fractions of lunar regolith samples, electron microprobe analyses, and image processing to make mineral maps from SEM-derived elemental maps.
    Differentiation and Resource Potential of the Moon — research to understand the nature and distribution of evolved lunar rocks, how they formed, and their potential as ore bodies. This work with Jeff Taylor involved detailed sample analyses and remote sensing studies.
    Geochemical Mapping — of the Moon and Mars using orbital remote sensing data. I have worked on image processing of Mars Odyssey Gamma Ray Spectrometer data and Lunar Prospector data to map and understand the surfaces and geological evolution of these bodies. With Jeff Taylor, we published multivariate classification maps of element concentrations on Mars.

Education and Public Outreach:

  • Cofounder of Planetary Science Research Discoveries educational web journal.
  • Writer and web coder/designer for HIGP, the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, and other NASA-funded programs in remote sensing and cosmochemistry.
  • NASA Publication Exploring the Moon: A Teacher's Guide with Activities for Earth and Space Sciences (EG-1997-10-116-HQ).
  • Outreach projects to help advance the public's understanding of planetary science and space resource utilization.
  • I have also been involved in the development of hands-on science activities for K-12 classrooms and have helped conduct teacher training workshops in planetary geology.
  • Recipient of 2018 Service Award of the Meteoritical Society.
