NASA’s OSIRIS-REx samples Asteroid Bennu, with HIGP faculty part of the team

Earlier today, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft “bumped into” asteroid Bennu, about 300 million km from Earth, and grabbed a sample of material from its surface. This material will be returned to Earth in 2023. Dr David Trang, HIGP Assistant Researcher, is a Participating Scientist on the OSIRIS-REx mission. He was funded by NASA to make maps of Bennu’s surface to help determine where on the asteroid the spacecraft would touch-down to take these incredibly valuable samples. You can read more about the OSIRIS-REx mission here.
