Tour Through the Solar System

Lesson 2: The Sun

Lesson 2, The Sun, introduces students to Earth's nearest star. This lesson uses six activities to instruct students how to safely observe, and identify, measure, and record features on the Sun. Knowledge gained from studying these features can be used to provide fundamental understanding of the Sun. For instance students will learn that the surface of the Sun is not pristine but has blemishes called sunspots. And that these sunspots yield information about the rotation rate of the Sun and whether the Sun is at or near solar maximum or minimum. Knowing where the Sun is in its 11-year solar cycle is important because solar activity affects climate and weather on Earth and elsewhere in the Solar System.
