Masaya volcano, Nicaragua

 

Part of our latest NASA EOS interdisciplinary science investigation is focused on studying the effects of persistent volcanism on the environment. Long-duration emissions of sulfur dioxide and other gases can drastically affect the local environment by killing vegetation and causing volcanic smog. One such volcano is Masaya in Nicaragua, and members of the EOS Team visited this volcano in February 2002. Planetary Analogs: I work a lot on the comparison of terrestrial and Martian volcanoes. Masaya is an excellent comparison to Olympus Mons volcano on Mars, as the following two views show:
